Lot 4190 18th CENTURY SIDE KNIFE ADAPTED FROM A HUNTING

SWORD. This very interesting side knife was adapted in the 18th Century for use as a side knife. This can plainly be seen by the grind of the blade and the removal of most of the knuckle bow. The sheath fits the knife perfectly indicating 18th Century creation of this side knife. The entire knife is 15 1/2" overall with a 9 1/2" blade and 4" false edge. The single fullered blade has visible engraving that is somewhat difficult to discern. The word "St. Deus" can be clearly seen and likely refers to Saint Deusdedit; a 7th Century Pope known for helping the poor. Brass crossguard with a decorated quillon on one end, and a shortened knuckle bow forming the other side of the crossguard. There is a similarly decorated ferrule and pommel cap with a copper wired wrapped wooden grip. Gilded brass mounted leather sheath with a highly embellished throat. CONDITION: blade has a gray mottled patina. Brass has a pleasing mellow patina with traces of original gilding present. Grip shows light wear. Sheath body is crazed and a bit flaked and the gilded brass mounts show expected wear. (02-25889/BF). NON-GUN. $400-700.
